Friday, February 15, 10:30 in room 108. “Everything They Should Have Known: Interracial Marriages in Literature” with Jonathan Hershey. In honor of The BIG READ: Coastal Georgia Reads Everything I Never Told You, Dr. Hershey, Dean of Humanities at Georgia Highlands College, will discuss how Marilyn and James in Celeste Ng’s novel might have anticipated trouble with a review of literary history. Interracial marriages, as well as relationships between characters who represent different societies, lead to conflicts in examples from literature, from Othello to Snow Falling on Cedars. The trouble is almost always imposed on the couples from the outside, but few characters survive unscathed. The discussion will explore a few of the literary warning signs.
