Dr. Ron Reigner accepting the presidency of the Georgia Reading Association from Julie Walker, past-president of GRA and a literacy specialist with Tift County Schools. Ron recently retired from the College of Coastal Georgia where he was holder of the Community-Sponsored Professorship in Early Childhood Reading and Language Arts in the School of Education and Teacher Preparation.

Nancy Matthews (left), President of the SSI Literary Guild presenting a grant check to Leslie Hartman, Executive Director at Safe Harbor.   Safe Harbor was given a grant for their "Fostering Better Readings:  Supported Reading" program to purchase books, rechargeable headsets with microphones and e-books for academic use.   Grants were also given to Coastal Coalition for Children for their "Bonding Through Books" project, Marshes of Glynn Libraries, St. Simons Branch to support "Baby Story Time", Glynn County Health Department to continue the highly successful national program, "Reach Out and Read," and Golden Isles Arts and Humanities (GIAHA) to assist in the purchase and distribution of books related to "The Big Read" in late winter/early spring of 2018.

A strong community is created by collaborative attention to the arts, including literary and cinematic media. The Guild also provides financial support for local literacy initiatives.
